Joseph Wong studied music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of York, where he obtained his MMus and PhD respectively. His composition teachers include Prof. Thomas Simaku and Prof. Victor Chan. He also studied voice with Dr. Derek Anthony and sheng (Chinese mouth organ) with Mr. Cheng Tak-wai.

 

As a composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music, Wong’s major works have been performed in Hong Kong, South Korea, Israel and United Kingdom. His recent performances include Bon Voyage – Star Ferry for solo cello, Lai King Hill Panorama for flute and piano, Banquet in the Street for clarinet, viola and piano, and Roll-up-Banner for violin and cello (SOUND-IMAGination: Hong Kong concert series, 2017, '14, '13, & '12 respectively), Via Dolorosa for solo violin (The 30th Asian Composers League Music Festival 2012, Israel), and audio-visual work In Our Fast-Changing City (Hong Kong Musicarama, 2012). In 2009, his Duo for Percussion was awarded the Nicola LeFanu Composition Prize by the University of York, United Kingdom.

 

As a music researcher, Wong is interested in topics on music theory and analysis, composition theory, music technology, popular music culture, music for visual media, and music industry. His research papers have been selected and presented in various international conferences, including the 35th Asian Composers League Conference and Festival (Taipei, 2018), the Music, Medievalism, and Modernism: Between Old and New Conference (Huddersfield, 2018), the International Conference on Entrepreneurship in Music, (Oslo, 2017), the Music for Audio-Visual Media II Conference (Leeds, 2016), and the East Asian Regional Association of the International Musicological Society (IMS-EA) 3rd Biennial Conference (Hong Kong, 2015). Some of these papers have been selected and published in peer-reviewed academic books and journal by top-notch publishers including Springer and Intellect Books. Wong has been working as a Lecturer (popular music and music production) at the Open University of Hong Kong for six years.  He had also been teaching courses on music analysis, music theory, and composition for the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University (SCE), Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Education University of Hong Kong.  He is also full member of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild and Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong.
